How to Spend a Relaxing Day Off in Kyoto: A tip for Busy Expat Executives

As a busy expat executive in Japan, your weekends are precious — a much-needed chance to recharge. If you’re visiting Kyoto, I want to share a way to experience the city, one that lets you truly unwind, far from the typical tourist crowds.

Not busy Gion and Higashiyama but a Peaceful Day in Demachiyanagi

When most people think of Kyoto, areas like Gion or Higashiyama often come to mind. But these spots are now packed with tourists, making it tough to relax and take it all in. That’s why I highly recommend Demachiyanagi (出町柳) area instead. Demachiyanagi is where the Kamo and Takano Rivers meet. It has a nostalgic home to many locals and Kyoto students. What makes it special is the lack of crowds, offering a genuine glimpse into daily life in Kyoto.

Refreshing by the Kamo River

The real charm of Demachiyanagi lies in spending time by the Kamo River. Specifically, the riverbanks north of Demachiyanagi are incredibly spacious and green, helping you forget the city’s hustle and bustle. The other day when I visited, I saw people reading under trees, others enjoying picnics with delicious bread and sandwiches from local bakeries, and students strolling or playing badminton. Everyone was simply enjoying their time. And best of all, Kyoto’s buildings are generally low, so from the Kamo River banks, you get unobstructed views of the lush green Higashiyama mountains. Gazing at this magnificent scenery will melt away your daily stress and surely bring you deep peace.

STAY at Shops Around Demachiyanagi

After soaking up the peaceful atmosphere by the Kamo River, take a leisurely stroll around Demachiyanagi. You’ll find old-fashioned shopping streets, unique cafes, and cozy restaurants scattered throughout the area. For expat executives juggling demanding schedules, how you spend your time off is crucial. Why not step away from your laptop for a bit and try having a “do-nothing” day in Demachiyanagi? It might be just what you need to feel refreshed.
